Well here we are, G’nerds #200. Its been almost four years and I’d like to think I’ve grown. G’nerds started as a classic example of how not to make a web comic: a comic about me and my friends full of inside jokes only meaningful to a very select group of people complete with bad art that seldom ventured and gained likewise. Eventually it became a gag a day video game comic, as it should’ve been as the word is in the title, but had the fatal flaw of only poking fun at video game logic, something that all other gaming comics did and did better and had little else to make it stand out from the pack. Today I focus on a formula I seldom see elsewhere that allows me to expound on the philosophy I see in play in the genre and include a joke at the same time. I use the bulk of the comic to discuss a heavy topic, its an elaborate build off, and then deliver the punch line in a low brow simple manner. Picture yourself reading Plato’s Symposium, like up to the halfway point, and then looking down to notice a dog vehemently humping your leg. There you go, that’s my formula. That’s four years experience right there. So yeah, G’nerds2000 is done. I made this decision a long time ago. G’nerds2000 has been holding me back. I have ideas for other comics I’d really like to do but I have to stop over and over to think up gags when I don’t feel like it. Basically I wanted something more versatile, a comic where I can jump from subject to subject without it being jarring. Enter Red City. Red City will be my next web comic about a city with some mysteries n’ shit. Going along side the weekly comic will be smaller mini comics, on line and off, to build on the city lore and develop the cast. Other non regular comic strips will be a key part of this, some familiar, some not.
